Beacon Hill Neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts

Beacon Hill in the Boston area is one of the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods lined with Victorian and Federal brick row houses, antique lanterns, and stately, gold-domed state buildings. The Massachusetts State House overlooks Boston Common, which has a winter skating pond. Nearby Charles Street has antique shops and chic boutiques. The Public Garden is across the street. The Hat Shell on the Charles River Esplanade hosts concerts during the summer.

Beacon Hill is also home to the oldest African American church in the country. In 1832, William Lloyd Garrison founded the New England Anti-Slavery society in this building. Today, it serves as a center for abolitionist activities. The African Meeting House is located at 14 Beacon Street. While visiting Beacon Hill, be sure to check out the African Meeting House and the Abiel Smith School.

The dining options on Beacon Hill are excellent. The XV Beacon, which has one of the city's top hotels, features excellent fine dining. Mooo, a popular steakhouse, offers brunch before the pandemic. The Grotto Italian restaurant is also in Beacon Hill. And if you are looking for Italian fare, you can't go wrong with Lydia Shire's Scampo.

For something a little less touristy, check out Beacon Hill's Museum of African American History. Nearby, you'll find the only remaining synagogue in the city and a museum on the Underground Railroad. Beacon Hill is also home to numerous art galleries and antique shops, and is considered "the Flat of Beacon Hill."

The area is one-half square miles and is bounded by Beacon Street, Cambridge Street, and Storrow Drive. The neighborhoods of Beacon Hill are noted for their historic landmarks. Drive down to Vilna Shuo for a wonderful tour experience and history programs. The beautiful Mt Vernon Street and some other streets also have a place on the National Register of Historic Places and though the neighborhood is a great place to explore if you’re interested in history and architecture, it also offers fun and entertainment to residents.

While Beacon Hill is not a gay neighborhood, there are plenty of LGBTQ+ residents with rich diversities. Some homes in the neighborhood were also home to famous residents. Louisa May Alcott, the author of the children's book, Little Women, lived in several Boston homes from 1852 to 1855. She rented rooms and stayed in the "sky parlor" of the Bellevue Hotel on Beacon Street. Later, she purchased the house but was too ill to enjoy it. A few houses in Beacon Hill were built for her daughters. Bay Village neighborhood found nearby is another interesting place in Boston to pay a visit when on a vacation.
